When I started TLB Admin Support back in 2014, I didn’t have a grand business plan, a branding strategy, or even an intention to become a full-time business owner. What I did have was a newborn daughter, a desire for flexibility, and a strong determination not to return to a full-time job that would keep me away from the early years of her life. What began as a simple decision to work on my own terms grew into a business that now, more than a decade later, has supported more than 50 clients across Australia.

Like many women stepping into the world of small business after becoming a mum, I started with one goal: to create a workable balance between motherhood and meaningful work. I wanted to be present—truly present—for my daughter’s milestones, appointments, school events, and everyday moments. At the same time, I wanted to maintain my skills, contribute financially, and build something of my own. What I didn’t realise then was just how much this decision would shape my life in the years to come.

Growing a Business From My Kitchen Table

In the early days, TLB Admin Support was run from my kitchen table with a laptop, a notepad, and a lot of determination. My first client (still working with him 10 years on) actually came from a website I built myself—proof that sometimes taking a chance and learning something new pays off in ways you don’t expect. My second client came through a simple Gumtree ad I posted. It wasn’t fancy or strategic, but it got me moving—and sometimes that’s all you need.

From there, word-of-mouth referrals and small business networks helped my client base grow. I offered the essentials: calendar management, inbox organisation, document creation, and general admin support—helping business owners regain time, structure, and clarity.

As demand increased, so did my skills. Over the years, I expanded into website creation, social media support, systems setup, and more specialised services for businesses wanting both ongoing admin support and help with the digital side of their operations. I’ve always taken pride in becoming the “go-to” person for clients who need someone reliable, organised, and able to pick things up quickly.

Working with more than 50 clients over the years has been incredibly rewarding. Every business is different, every challenge is unique, and every client has taught me something new. Some projects were short-term; others turned into long-term partnerships. Many clients have trusted me with the heart of their operation—their inboxes, their schedules, their websites—and that trust means everything.

A New Chapter: Welcoming My Son in 2020

When I had my son in 2020, the world was a very different place. We were living through a pandemic, schools were closing, routines were shifting, and everything felt uncertain. But one thing remained steady: my business gave me the flexibility to step back when needed and return when I was ready.

I was able to take some maternity leave, recharge, and enjoy those precious early months without the pressure of “going back to work” on someone else’s timeline. When I eased back into client work, I did it gradually, adjusting my workload around naps, feeding schedules, and the unpredictability that comes with a new baby.

That period reminded me why I created TLB Admin Support in the first place. Flexibility isn’t just a perk—it’s a lifeline for so many mums balancing family commitments with the desire to maintain a career.

The Reality Behind the Flexibility

People often assume that working for yourself means freedom, spare time, and stress-free days. And while there are incredible benefits—like attending school assemblies, sports carnivals, parent-teacher meetings, and after-school activities—the reality is that flexibility can come with its challenges.

Working for yourself means:

  • Early mornings when deadlines are looming
  • Late nights finishing client projects after the kids are asleep
  • Breaking your own structure when school schedules, sick days, or family life requires it
  • Constantly adapting, because no two days look the same

There are days when I feel completely on top of everything—client work is flowing, the house isn’t in chaos, the kids are happy, and I’m achieving my goals. Then there are days when I’m working from the car during after-school activities, answering emails at 5am, or catching up on tasks late at night.

But through it all, the flexibility is worth it. The ability to shape my work around my family—not the other way around—is something I wouldn’t trade for anything.

Why I Love What I Do

Running TLB Admin Support has given me far more than a career. It has given me connection, confidence, and purpose. I love being the person who helps business owners grow by taking tasks off their plate. I love creating systems that make their lives easier. I love seeing a client’s excitement when a new website goes live or when their overwhelm turns into clarity.

But more than anything, I love that this business allows me to be both a present mum and a dedicated professional. I get to show my kids what it looks like to work hard, build something from scratch, and stay committed to your goals—even when it means sacrificing a bit of sleep here and there.

Looking Ahead

As my kids grow, so does TLB Admin Support. I’m continually refining my services, learning new skills, and finding smarter ways to support small business owners. The business has evolved right alongside my family, and that’s something I’m incredibly proud of.

Also last year, I teamed up with Carolyn and Carmel to create the WA VA Hub, something I’m incredibly proud of. Together, we created a space for virtual assistants across Western Australia to connect, learn, support one another, and grow stronger businesses. It has been incredibly rewarding to build a supportive community alongside two amazing women.

Whether you’re a business owner needing support, a fellow mum considering starting your own venture, or someone simply curious about the juggle between work and family, I hope my story shows that it is possible. It isn’t always easy, but it is absolutely worth it.

And if you ever need admin support, digital help, or someone in your corner cheering you on while taking care of the behind-the-scenes work—I’d love to chat.
